Show your work
Every material on this site is one of mine. I'd rather show yours. Here's what I'm after, how to send it, and how credit works.
Every material on surfacelabs.app right now is one of mine.
They’re test renders. Most of them exist because I was checking that a node did what I thought it did, and the one that looked best at the end got screenshotted. That’s fine for showing you the editor. As a gallery it’s thin, and it tells you nothing about what the tool is actually good for, because I’m not using it the way you are. I’m using it to find bugs.
So I’d like to fill the site with your work instead.
What I’m after
Anything made in Surface Labs. Some specifics, since “anything” is unhelpful:
- Finished materials, rendered however you like to render them. In engine, in Blender, in the 3D preview, doesn’t matter.
- The graph behind it, if you’re willing. I’d like to show how people actually build, and nobody builds the way the tutorials do.
- Trim sheets and tiling sets. These photograph badly and I keep not showing them, which is my fault rather than theirs.
- Anything you made on an iPad or a phone. I spent a long time on the touch and stylus side and I almost never see it used. If you’re texturing on a tablet on a train I want to hear about it.
- Work that went wrong in an interesting way. Some of the most useful things anyone has sent me were half broken graphs where someone was clearly fighting the tool. They’re good to look at and they tell me what to go fix.
It doesn’t have to be a hero asset. A convincing brick is worth more to someone reading this site than a technically clever graph that doesn’t read as a surface.
How to send it
Post it in the Discord. That’s it. No form, no submission window, no theme.
If I’d like to put something on the site I’ll ask you in the thread first. Nothing goes up without a yes from you, and no isn’t a problem. Plenty of people post things they’re happy to show the Discord and not the internet, which is completely reasonable.
Credit
Your name however you want it written, and a link wherever you want people sent: portfolio, itch page, socials, shop, or nothing at all if you’d rather stay anonymous.
You keep the rights to your work. I’m asking for permission to show it on this site and link back to you, not for anything else. If you later want it taken down, tell me and it comes down.
If you already posted something
I’ve probably seen it and not said anything, which is me being slow rather than me passing on it. Poke me about it in the thread.
Surface Labs is free during early access, and the Discord is still the fastest way to get a feature request in front of me.
